Each choir selects from the following festival components.
PERFORMANCE PODS [60 min] Performance Pods bring together three choirs—typically of a similar type—for a shared performance and learning experience. Each choir performs a 20-minute set, then remains to listen to the performances of the other two ensembles in the pod. Following their performance, each choir receives written feedback from two festival clinicians, offering valuable artistic insights and suggestions for continued growth. Choirs can register for up to 2 Performance Pods over the course of the festival. Performance Pods are open to the public. [Note that in the Contemporary Choirs stream, performance pods are adjusted to performance pairs to allow time for sound checks.]
CLINICS [30 or 60 min] Clinics are interactive workshop sessions for a single choir with one of the festival's clinicians centred on repertoire prepared in advance of the festival. Using a variety of approaches, clinicians offer fresh artistic perspectives, practical strategies for addressing technical challenges, and ideas to refine interpretation and performance. Choirs may register for up to two clinics over the course of the festival.
WORKSHOPS [60 min] Workshops explore a wide range of choral topics and are led by festival clinicians and guest presenters throughout the festival. Topics include vocal technique, sight reading, improvization, stylistic interpretation, and more. Singers are welcome to attend the workshops that interest them most and are not required to attend with their full choir. Choirs may register for up to three workshop blocks over the course of the festival. [Note that for choirs in the Children's Choir stream, workshops are attended as a full ensemble rather than individually.}
FESTIVAL SING SESSIONS [30 min] Join singers from across the festival for a shared singing experience. Morning sessions focus on warm-ups and ensemble singing, while afternoon sessions explore new repertoire taught on the spot. Festival Sings are a chance to meet singers from other choirs, learn in a different way, and experience the joy of singing together. Choirs can sign up for up to 4 Festival Sing sessions over the course of the festival.
POP UP PERFORMANCES [30 min] Pop-Up Performances offer choirs the opportunity to share their music with a new audience at one of our downtown pop-up concert venues. At each pop-up performance, choirs perform a 30-minute set; a festival is host on hand to introduce each group. A digital piano will be provided, making it easy to bring choral music into the heart of the city! Choirs can sign up for up to 2 pop-up performances over the course of the festival. [Note that we may not be able to provide a full compliment of audio gear for amplified groups on all festival days.]
SPOTLIGHT CONCERTS [60 min] Spotlight Concerts showcase a variety of festival choirs in mid-day performances on the Friday and Saturday of the festival. Choirs may apply or be invited to perform, and all festival participants on site that day are welcome to attend free of charge. Spotlight Concerts are also open to the public, with tickets available for just $5. These concerts provide additional performance opportunities while encouraging singers to experience a wide range of ensembles and repertoire from across the festival.
FEATURE CONCERT The festival's Saturday evening Feature Concert showcases an outstanding guest choir from outside Alberta (to be announced soon). Festival participants receive preferred seating and discounted ticket pricing, making it an excellent opportunity to experience an exceptional performance by one of North America's leading choral ensembles. Tickets available on a first come-first served basis.
