I have had the wonderful opportunity to be a part of AYC for two consecutive years and I can say without a doubt that AYC was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. The repertoire was so diverse, and everyone in the group is incredibly talented. We all instantly connected over our shared love of singing and making music together. It revolutionized my voice, not only in a choir, but also my solo voice, and I have taken the teaching I’ve learned in rehearsals and applied it to the ways I sing today. I can’t thank AYC enough for the welcoming and passionate atmosphere which not only brought me a bunch of new friendships, but also a deepened love for the art of singing.

AYC and everyone working to make it happen is wonderfully welcoming, friendly, and inclusive! By the end of it you've formed a community of awesome, hardworking singers, and learned more than seems possible from just two weekends of singing. Under the direction of accomplished conductors from all over the world we get to expand our musical experience immensely and develop our skills on a higher level than most choirs I've previously performed with can. We are challenged with learning exciting, ambitious music, and have loads of fun along the way! AYC is an experience that has shaped my choral career, and allowed me the opportunity to connect with amazing singers my age across the province.

The Alberta Youth Choir has helped to invigorate my choral program in a number of ways. Students who have been accepted into AYC have developed as musicians by leaps and bounds and have returned to my choir inspired and ready to lead the way among their peers. Now, many of my choristers are abuzz with excitement when recommendation and audition time comes along. I was also fortunate to have had the chance to be involved as the AYC apprentice conductor. Working closely with a expert choral conductor over the course of the rehearsal weekend and during the choir’s residency was probably the best professional development that I’ve ever done. It changed my professional practice for the better and provided me with a mentor who I can continue to reach out to for help and advice. Beyond this, involvement with the Alberta Youth Choir has helped me to connect with other choral directors across the province, has inspired my repertoire choices, and has contributed to creating new assessment standards for my singers.
