Participants will learn to give focus to text and story in this workshop. We will explore different tactics on how to approach text in song to find storytelling elements and learn how we can tie that into vocal dynamics, phrasing, and style. |
Tuesday - Beat in our Feet | Janita Frantsi
In this workshop, we will explore different rhythms and movements through our bodies. We will explore how different body parts can create rhythms and how these movements can create dances. Together with the instructor, the participants will learn choreography and design a dance to show at the end of the week. Let's put the beat to our feet! |
Wednesday - The Joy of World Percussion | Marcus Fung
In this workshop we will explore the world of hand drums alongside a variety of interesting and colorful world percussion, including shakers, bells, chimes and gongs that help to bring a music piece to life with rhythm, energy and pizazz. |
Thursday - Ukulele Workshop | Monica Dear
In this workshop, participants will make music with the ukulele. We will learn about different aspects of the instrument including playing a melody; playing chords; strumming; and then putting it all together by singing a melody while strumming that harmony! |
Amy Voyer is an all-round fixture of the Edmonton choral scene. She teaches elementary music, sings professionally with Pro Coro Canada and FEMME Vocal Ensemble, and conducts Tamariki - the youngest ensemble in Kokopelli Choirs. Amy has had the pleasure of working with various ensembles in Edmonton, including Edmonton Youth and Children's Choirs and Edmonton Young Voices. She holds Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education degrees from Concordia University of Edmonton.
Amy is known for her exuberance, her artistry, and the sound of her unmistakable laugh. She is absolutely delighted to be conducting the SongBurst choir camp for kids this summer! |
Katherine Tilbury is an expressive pianist who is passionate about collaborative piano and youth education. Hailing from Lacombe, Alberta, Katherine began studying piano at age five. She completed her Bachelor of Music degree with a concentration in piano from the University of Alberta where she studied under Dr. Patricia Tao. Katherine is a versatile pianist and has studied contemporary, jazz and classical repertoire. She maintains an active private piano studio with over twenty-five students and is extremely passionate about music education. This dedication is shown not only through teaching studio lessons and masterclasses, but through her position at The King’s University where she works with instrumentalists both in studio classes, and as a recital partner. Through her work as a freelance soloist and collaborator, Katherine has enjoyed playing wonderful works of choral repertoire with choirs in Edmonton including Kapella Kyrie Slavic Chamber Choir, Accord Ensemble and the Archbishop Jordan Choirs under Jolaine Kerley. Her most recent projects include acting as Music Director for Archbishop Jordan High School’s senior production of Little Women and Repetiteur for Pop Goes the Opera's production of Suor Angelica in 2022. When she isn’t at the piano, you can find Katherine in her painting studio.

Mhairi Berg is a multi-faceted artist who has enjoyed a successful career as both a performer and educator within music and theatre. Mhairi holds an MA in Music Theatre Performance from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. She is a Sterling Award Winner for her original score composition for Mr. Burns, a Post-Electric Play. She is also an award-winning improvisor, having toured internationally. Mhairi works professionally as a vocal coach, director, theatre educator, choreographer and musical director. She has been a theatre educator for Theatre Alberta’s Artstrek, the Foote Theatre School, Grindstone Theatre, as well as many schools across Alberta. Mhairi is currently developing her new musical, Morningside Road, which will have its debut at the Edmonton International Fringe Festival this summer.

Monica Dear is a veteran music teacher for Edmonton Public Schools. Sharing her ukulele expertise and best practices with other music teachers and students of all ages is her passion.
A Level III James Hill Ukulele Initiative Certificate holder, she is also founder of the Elk Island Senior Honour Choir and has conducted many school, church, and community choirs. Monica is a recipient of Choir Alberta's Con Spirito award and was the Education Manager for the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra for eight seasons. She sings with the Richard Eaton Singers, continues to study ukulele with acclaimed teachers, and is the leader of the Highlands Ukulele Gang. |
Janita Frantsi is a contemporary dance artist originally from Finland and now based on Treaty 6 territory in Amiskwacîwâskahikan. During her time in Edmonton, Janita has worked as a dancer, choreographer, and instructor with several organizations such as Mile Zero Dance, KO Dance Projects, Edmonton Opera, University of Alberta, and Concordia University of Edmonton. She has created works for the Nextfest Arts Festival, SkirtsAFire Festival, Orchesis Dance Motif, Madrigal Singers, and TEDxUAlberta. Some of her latest work has been with dance and film, and she is excited to explore this new medium. Janita has a Master of Arts in Dance from the University of Alberta and currently teaches academic dance courses at the University of Alberta and Concordia University of Edmonton. She works with MZD as an instructor and education outreach coordinator.
Janita believes that dance and the arts are for everyone. She loves sharing her passion for dance and movement with movers of different ages, levels, and interests. As an educator, she values individual backgrounds and encourages students to use her material as a stepping stone in their own exploration. |
Marcus Fung is a music educator, facilitator, creative, and advocate for the power of the expressive arts to uplift the human spirit. He graduated from Grant MacEwan Music College in jazz piano performance and composition. He has played in bands, accompanied yoga classes, played for ceremonies and continues to share the joy of participatory music making places such ranging from pre-schools, hospitals and hospices.

CAMP LOCATION
The camp will be held at Crestwood Community League. POST-REHEARSAL HANGOUTS Kids and parents are invited to bring their lawn chairs and relax after rehearsal. Food and drinks will be available from local vendors! |
CONCERT
Friday, August 18 the SongBurst Choir Camp for Kids and Adult Summer Choir join forces for a concert under the Big Top at Fort Edmonton Park! SongBurst participants can enjoy free access to the park during the day, and continue the fun under the sun performing in our outdoor concert! |
