Heather Fraser maintains a vibrant career as a choral conductor, music educator and collaborative pianist in Nova Scotia. A dynamic educator with a passion for community building, she is the Artistic Director of the Annapolis Valley Honour Choirs and a music specialist in the Halifax Regional Centre for Education. She is also Artistic Director of the Halifax based women-identified choir, The Aeolian Singers. Heather is the past Program Director for the NS Choral Federation and currently the VP of Advocacy for Choral Canada. She feels humbled to be a part such a talented and invested teams working on behalf of our diverse choral community. This role has kept her busy during the pandemic, advocating for equitable treatment of singing communities across the country, arranging educational opportunities, webinars and conversations for choirs of all kinds - finding ways to keep singers connected from coast to coast to coast.  Heather initiated the National “Singing in Canadian Schools Covid Impact Survey” - the data from which produced a clear picture of how singing was decimated in the last school year across Canada. The report and recommendations from the study were very influential in the reinstatement of many of these programs. The ACC is Heather's first experience as a guest conductor!  She is incredibly grateful to Choir Alberta for allowing her this opportunity, and is thrilled to be here in Edmonton to share this experience with the rich and vibrant choral community here.

COVID-19 protocol

The health and wellbeing of ACC choristers is our top priority. All accepted choristers are expected to adhere to the COVID-19 protocols in place for this program. At present, our protocol requires that:
  • Proof of full vaccination (at least two doses of an approved COVID-19 vaccine) must be provided before the first rehearsal
  • Masks be worn by all individuals at all times
  • 2-metre distance be maintained between individuals at all times
  • A screening checklist be submitted on a daily basis prior to the first rehearsal of the day
  • A well-organized process for arriving at and departing from rehearsals be in place
  • Equipment or printed music not be shared
  • Car pooling be avoided; but that, if there is no other option, individuals remain masked while in transit
  • Any symptomatic individual not attend rehearsal
  • Any individual who becomes symptomatic during a rehearsal leave immediately

What conductors & choristers say about ACC

ACC is a unique experience, and an opportunity to use my talents to create a masterpiece, alongside like-minded Alberta youth. I attend ACC because it is a chance to expand my musical horizons and learn new techniques. I would recommend ACC for any young chorister.
—Aliya, Northern ACC Chorister (Northern Lights Harmonics, Lac La Biche)

ACC is a wonderful program for gifted and hard-working young singers! The experience for choristers goes beyond the synthesis of their vocal, aural, theoretical, technical and interpretive skills. It provides them the opportunity to meet new friends and to work on a consistently high caliber of repertoire. Being in this safe environment of music-making builds their confidence for performing. It has always been a pleasure for me as a conductor to be able to recommend my choristers and have them come back rejuvenated with added tools and strategies for healthy singing. ACC also allows them the opportunity to be leaders in their choir as they model what they have learned and share their experience with other choristers.
—Beth Pecson, Music Teacher, Monsignor Fee Otterson School

I was blown away by the performance and stunned by what [the guest conductor] Ruth managed to create with the choristers in such a short amount of time! I was moved to tears and cheers by the songs the choir sang!
—Nicolette Groeneveld, parent of ACC participant
