Introducing Choralfest E

The newest addition to Choralfest!

Choir Alberta is excited to announce the addition of Choralfest E to our program roster. E is for ensemble, electric, exciting, energetic, extra — and the list goes on. This festival is for a cappella groups, vocal jazz ensembles, contemporary vocal ensembles, and other small groups focusing on non-traditional choral repertoire.

Choralfest E has been designed to offer each ensemble a customized experience, offering opportunities for public performances, for private workshops, to observe workshop sessions, and to take in feature performances.  Participating groups that give a public performance as part of their Choralfest E experience are able to offset their registration fee with ticket sales.

The inaugural Choralfest E will take place at the National Music Centre in Calgary, 4-6 April 2019. Tickets for evening performances will go on sale 1 Feb 2019.

Festival model

Workshops and performances are scheduled separately for Choralfest E — workshops take place during the day at the National Music Centre, and performances take place in the evening at the King Eddy. This allows for a more customizable festival and a more exciting performance experience.

Each group is encouraged to sign up for a workshop and a performance. However, if it is a better fit for your group to only sign up for a workshop or to only sign up for a performance, that is also a possibility, You may request that your group's workshop takes place before or after your performance.

Workshops are scheduled in hour-long blocks. Groups will be escorted to their workshop space at the scheduled time and proceed with a brief sound check and warm up, after which the workshop will begin. Workshops are not open to the general public, but they are open to other festival participants.

Each group's performance is 30 minutes. Your group will be paired with another ensemble to create an hour-long performance block. Sound checks will take place in the break prior to your performance block — they are only 10 minutes in duration, so feel free to take a few minutes at the beginning of your performance to do any tweaking your group requires. Unsecured holding and green room spaces will be provided.

Each group will receive a written evaluation of their performance from the festival evaluator. In addition, each performance will be video recorded and shared with the group after the festival. Note that there is likely to be background noise from the audience on your video.

Offsetting registration fees with ticket sales

100 tickets will be available for each performance block at a cost of $10 + service charge. At the time of purchase, ticket buyers will indicate with which group(s) in the performance block they are affiliated. For each ticket sold, the affiliated group will receive a $10 credit toward their registration fee. This means that if a group is able to sell 48 tickets, their Choralfest E registration will be free!

Note that credits for any amount above and beyond the registration fee will not be issued.
