Choir Manager — Alberta Youth Choir

The Alberta Youth Choir
The Alberta Youth Choir (AYC), presented by Choir Alberta, is the provincial youth choir for outstanding singers between the ages of 16 and 22. AYC provides a unique opportunity for singers from across the provinces to join forces in pursuit of choral excellent under the direction of a renowned conductor.

The members of AYC gather for a rehearsal weekend in late September and then for a residency and series of performances in mid-October. In addition to serving as a resident ensemble at Music Conference Alberta, the choir performs at the MCA Showcase Concert and, subsequently, in two tour concerts.

Job description
Choir Alberta is seeking a Choir Manager for the Alberta Youth Choir to contribute to late-stage planning and coordinate the delivery of the AYC program. In collaboration with Choir Alberta staff and key volunteers, you will create a unique and exciting experience for singers, audiences, and other stakeholders. Your work will not only impact the 50 singers in AYC, the 300+ delegates at Music Conference Alberta, and the 800+ audience members who will attend an AYC performance, but it will also play a key role in galvanizing and re-energizing AYC as the choral community continues its recovery from COVID-19.

This is a part-time short-term contract position working approximately 9 hours over 3 days per week. The position is based out of Choir Alberta’s Edmonton office with the opportunity to work from home at times. It is essential that you be available for the duration of AYC’s rehearsal weekend (Sep 23-24 in Calgary) and residency and tour (Oct 19-22 in Edmonton and Calgary). This short-term contract will start mid-Sep and wrap up 158 Nov 2023; the fee for the contract is $2,500.

What you’ll actually do
  • Ensure the core values of Choir Alberta are upheld during the AYC planning and delivery process
  • Contribute to the final stages of program planning, including logistics, itineraries, communications with singers, and volunteer scheduling
  • Coordinate AYC Working Group volunteers and support them in their respective roles
  • Serve as the go-to person for singers and guest artists during the rehearsal weekend, residency, and tour
  • Manage AYC at rehearsals, performances, and throughout the tour, facilitating positive and meaningful experiences for singers and stakeholders
  • Serve as AYC’s tour manager including working with the bus driver, performance venues, and concert hosts
  • Complete the AYC Program Report
  • Work collaboratively with Choir Alberta staff

What you’re great at
  • Working with youth
  • Transforming the vision for AYC 2023 into reality
  • Event planning, including foreseeing potential challenges
  • Oral and written communications
  • Engaging volunteers
  • Identifying opportunities for funding and financial support
  • Making a detailed plan but being ready to adapt as needed
